Session Details
In late 2023, ICANN org established a director role for engagement with the academic sector. This role is similar to those setup for business and civil society. While it is not a separate, dedicated function within ICANN org, it is meant to establish a more cohesive approach to engagement with the academic sector and provide strategic direction for the org in this area.
This session is intended to share with the community how the role is setup, as well as initial thinking on an overall strategic engagement plan for academia. There will be ample time for open community conversation.

This session will provide a breakdown of data, reporting, and feedback collected since the Registration Data Request Service (RDRS) pilot program was launched in November 2023. RDRS provides a more consistent and standardized format to handle requests for access to nonpublic registration data related to generic top-level domains (gTLDs). The data collected in this pilot is essential to determining future enhancements and informing the potential development of a long-term System for Standardized Access/Disclosure. Who should attend? Registrars and users who need access to non-public data including consumer protection advocates, cybersecurity pros, government officials, IP professionals, law enforcement, intellectual property professionals.

This first part of the session will provide updates on the Accountability and Transparency Review Team (ATRT3) Recommendation 3.5 to create a Holistic Review, on ATRT3 Recommendation 3.6 to evolve Organizational Reviews into a Continuous Improvement Program, the timing of the Fourth Accountability and Transparency Review (ATRT4) and on the Lifecycle of Reviews project as part of the ongoing work to improve the Specific Reviews process. In addition, we will provide a progress update on the implementation of the second Organizational Review of the Nominating Committee (NomCom2 Review).
In the second part of the session, ICANN org will provide an update on the implementation of Board approved Specific Reviews recommendations, and the implementation of the Enhancing ICANN Accountability Work Stream 2.

Session Details
The Registration Data Request Service (RDRS) is a new and free service developed to provide a more consistent and standardized format for handling requests to access nonpublic registration data related to generic top-level domains (gTLDs). This two-year pilot program which launched in November 2023 is a proof-of-concept initiative for individuals and entities with a legitimate interest in nonpublic registration data. It was developed with community input and implemented at the direction of the ICANN Board to help inform policy decisions related to a System for Standardized Access/Disclosure (SSAD). RDRS usage metric reports are published monthly and provide system usage and demand data as requested by the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council. The RDRS Standing Committee review the published metrics and works with ICANN org on suggested system improvements.

The Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council has initiated an Expedited Policy Development Process (EPDP) for Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). This EPDP is expected to 1) determine the approach for a consistent definition of all gTLDs; and 2) develop policy recommendations that will eventually allow for the introduction of variant gTLDs at the top-level. Appropriately, this working session will allow the EPDP Team to continue its Phase 2 deliberations pertaining to second-level variant management and prepare for the final policy recommendations, following its analysis of the public comments received on the preliminary recommendations. As IDN is an important element in the New gTLD Program Next Round and a topic of interest to the broader ICANN community, attendees are welcome to observe the session.

10:45- 11:30: GAC Discussion on DNS AbuseThis session aims to continue GAC consideration of ICANN org and ICANN community initiatives to prevent and mitigate DNS Abuse, including outcomes and next steps on enhanced contract provisions, initially proposed during ICANN77, subsequently adopted by Contracted Parties and approved by the ICANN Board, and in effect since 5 April 2024.
11:30-12:15: GAC Discussion on WHOIS and Data Protection (incl. Accuracy)This session aims to discuss status and consider possible next steps for the GAC in relation to deliberations and implementation efforts aiming to establish a new WHOIS/Registration Data policy framework taking into account relevant Data Protection law. The GAC will be briefed on latest developments and related policy concerns, in connection with: The new Registration Data Consensus Policy (EPDP Phase 1) and progress on addressing the specific needs of Urgent Requests for disclosure of registration data in emergency circumstances (following GAC Advice on this matter in the ICANN79 GAC San Juan Communiqué); Operation, usage and possible improvements of the Registration Data Request Service (RDRS) as a proof of concept of EPDP Phase 2 Policy Recommendations for a System for Standardized Access/Disclosure (SSAD); Ongoing discussions of the possibility to resume implementation of the privacy/proxy services accreditation policy recommendaitons; and Dependencies on the scoping of possible future policy work regarding accuracy of registration data.

Join the Board Strategic Planning Committee (BSPC) for an interactive session in which the BSPC will share the draft strategies designed to shape ICANN’s activities for fiscal years 2026–2030. This session is a great opportunity for the community to actively engage in the discussion of the draft strategies and provide valuable feedback before the draft Strategic Plan is made available for Public Comment in July.
During the session, the BSPC will present the draft strategies, highlighting the associated strategic goals and objectives. Participants will have the chance to ask questions, share insights, and offer suggestions to help refine and strengthen the draft strategies.
Your input is crucial in shaping the direction of ICANN for the next five years. Don't miss this chance to be part of the conversation and contribute to the development of the next Strategic Plan.
